Green Mobilisation
Migros is committed to green mobility. There are attractive transport offerings for employees and customers, which avoid emissions. In 2011 the retailer adopted a directive for the green procurement of company cars.
Migros enables its customers to shop without using their cars: more than four fifths of all branches can be conveniently reached on foot or bicycle. Major shopping centres have good public transport links. At a total of 13 locations, Migros offers delivery transporters. Heavy household appliances like washing machines and cooling appliances are delivered home free of charge. Some branches also offer a green home-delivery service for smaller shopping baskets. For instance, the Taxi has been doing the rounds in the city of Lucerne since the summer of 2011: at an affordable standard price, an electric bicycle will bring the shopping bags home from the Migros branch. Shopping without using a car is, of course, also possible by the click of a mouse: the LeShop online supermarket delivers its products with Swiss Post, a total of 635'000 times in 2011.
Trailblazing solutions supported
Despite these green offers of Migros, a considerable proportion of consumers shop using their private car. Anyone wanting to buy bulky, heavy or large quantities of goods will usually take their own car, regardless of how good the public transport network or the parking options are. Green measures that address the end of the drive, i.e. the shopping centres, therefore fail to have any effect. For that reason, Migros uses comprehensive solutions, for instance as part of the espace.mobilité stakeholder group. At the start of 2011, the Urban Mobility Future project was initiated. Migros is one of its main sponsors, together with other companies, NGOs, public authorities and science. The aim is to develop a joint vision as well as specific suggestions for measures in respect of future mobility in the metropolitan area of Zurich. This commitment is a specific contribution to the solution of questions in urban and regional planning, transport and environmental policies.
Business traffic made green
Employees of the FMC are offered discounted season tickets for public transport. They can also fall back on Mobility vehicles both privately and professionally; in doing so, they drive about 130'000 kilometres annually for business trips. The regional Migros cooperatives have a total of some 700 company cars, which drive 19 million kilometres annually. Business trips make up about 10% of the retailer's fuel consumption. Last year, Migros adopted a directive for the procurement of climate-friendly company cars. It specifies that Migros' car fleet should emit an average of only 130 grams of CO2 per kilometre by 2016. Migros also promotes the use of bicycles: the retailer participated in the «Bike to work» campaign for the seventh time in 2011. By increasingly holding video and telephone conferences, Migros is trying to cut back on flights. Since 2006, all business flights of the FMC, the 10 regional cooperatives and the industry and logistics enterprises have been CO2-offset via the myclimate foundation. The money goes to a carbon-offset project in Brazil. In 2011 the CO2 emissions of the business flights increased by 8% to 2'260 tonnes.
