Migros, the world's most responsible retailer
Time and again, Migros finds its exemplary business practices acknowledged in the form of awards and favourable survey results. In 2009, the Group was ranked the world's most responsible retailer, among other honours.
Awards received in 2009
The world's most responsible retailer
In Barcelona in 2009, the World Retail Congress voted Migros the Responsible Retailer of the Year – despite seemingly overwhelming competition from such global firms as Tesco, Marks and Spencer and others. Along with the retailer's active commitment to environmental sustainability, the jury commended the Migros Culture Percentage in particular, concluding that "for Migros sustainability is clearly in its DNA".
Switzerland's most reputable company
In its annual Global Pulse survey, the New York-based Reputation Institute assesses the reputation of 1,300 major companies. In Switzerland, the institute evaluated 13 large firms. Migros again achieved an excellent score, as in 2008, and was rated "the most reputable company". Companies were ranked according to earnings, assets under management or premiums written, whichever applied, as well as brand awareness.
Best reputation in environmental practices
In a Reader's Digest survey, 24,000 readers identified Migros as Switzerland's most reputable retailer in environmental matters, while Migros brands Total and Migrol topped the rankings in the survey's Laundry Detergent and Oil Companies categories.
Switzerland's favourite retailer
According to the "Handels-Check Schweiz" survey, Migros is the preferred food retailer of Swiss consumers. More than 50 per cent of respondents identified Migros as their favourite company. "Handels-Check Schweiz" is a representative survey conducted online by market research firm Marketagent in the country's German and French-speaking areas.
Switzerland's most innovative retailer
In the innovation ranking compiled by the University of St Gallen on behalf of Bilanz, a Swiss business monthly, Migros came fourth, behind Nestlé, Swatch and Logitech. This makes it Switzerland's innovation leader in the retail category, a top spot owed in no small part to the innovative drive of LeShop, a Migros subsidiary.
Retailer of the Year
Q&A, a Dutch market research firm and consultancy, polled shoppers in eight European countries for their favourite retail chain. In Switzerland, some 7,700 consumers rated a total of 59 retailers. Migros supermarkets received the most votes – earning them the title of Retailer of the Year – ahead of furniture maker IKEA, and the third place won by Ex Libris meant that Migros was represented twice over on the winners' rostrum.
Third place in GfK's corporate reputation survey
For their representative BusinessReflector 2009 survey, the market research institute GfK and the University of Zurich interviewed 3,400 people on their perception of 112 Swiss companies in terms of brand image and awareness, quality, innovation, emotional components and corporate social responsibility. Migros ranks third in this survey, its reputation outstripped only by Swatch Group and Lindt & Sprüngli.
Rated third in WWF Palm Oil Buyers' Scorecard
In a WWF rating on the subject of sustainable palm oil, Migros came in third place. The conservation organisation assessed 49 major European food and cosmetics retailers and manufacturers on their commitment and actions relating to sustainable palm oil; Migros scored 25 out of a potential maximum 29 points.
