Staff Structure
Migros employees have the following main characteristics: they are primarily female and remain with the company for a long time, they make up a balanced age structure and they are a good example of cultural diversity.
Gender structure
«Migros is female»: in 2013 the Migros Group employed 58ʼ699 women and 35‘577 men. The proportion of women was 62%. The average for the Swiss economy is significantly lower (around 46%). In the three strategic business units of Cooperative Retailing, Commerce and Travel, which employ almost 85% of the Migros Group's entire workforce, the proportion of women is even higher at between 65% and 76%. That is one of the reasons why Migros supports the compatibility of career and family with a broad range of family policy measures and benefits.

Distribution by age groups

Distribution by gender
The proportion of male and female employees per age group is identical as a whole. However, when considering the age distribution among men and women, the proportion of women in the age group of 15 to 40 years is higher than for men. This shows that women are able to combine career and family effectively if corresponding support measures are in place.

Length of service by gender
Employees are loyal to Migros: some 58% of men and 54% of women have worked at the company for more than five years, whereby men (10.8 years) stay slightly longer than women (9.2 years) on average. These values put Migros above the Swiss average, i.e. 54% of employees with five or more years of service.

Proportion of men and women by years of service
The above-average proportion of women in the workforce across all length of service categories shows that women at Migros do not necessarily need to interrupt their career to bring up children. For this reason, women working at Migros often have more work experience, not less. In particular, these factors result in more equality in working life and prevent wage differences based on employment history.

Nationalities and nations
Migros is a Swiss company, also as regards cultural diversity. A typical Swiss factor of success is the active integration of a diverse range of employees with different cultural backgrounds.
Percentage of foreign workers
In the year under review, Migros's workforce consisted of 72.2% Swiss nationals and 27.8% foreign nationals. This breakdown of nationalities has been more or less stable for many years. More than a third of foreign employees were born in Switzerland and belong to the second or third generation. In 2013 people from 152 nations were employed at Migros. Migros sees this cultural diversity as an opportunity and therefore consciously promotes it with a tolerant and discrimination-free corporate climate.
